The Ibrox midfielder has become a firm fan favourite since leaving Sheffield United back in 2021.

Daniel Lafferty, a former star player for Sheffield United, acknowledges that he was taken aback when he learned that John Lundstram had joined Rangers since he had always assumed he was “more of a Celtic fan”.

After his contract at Bramall Lane expired in the summer of 2021, Lundstram left the Premier League team after they were relegated from the English premier league. With the support of the Light Blues, he has since established himself as a fan favourite and has reached his peak performance since Philippe Clement’s arrival.

With his current contract scheduled to expire in the summer, Lundstram is in contract talks with the Rangers. Meanwhile, former Blades teammate Lafferty has been talking up his old friend while acknowledging that the switch took him off surprise. Lafferty, who played for Institute in Northern Ireland after graduating from the Celtic academy, believes that his misgivings about the 30-year-old’s loyalty north of the border were allayed when he moved to Ibrox.

“When I was at Sheffield I did have an inkling that Lunny was a bit more of a Celtic fan although when the chance came to join Rangers he wasn’t going to turn it down,” the self-described Celtic diehard said to The Sun. He’s performed amazingly well for them.
John is ridiculous in theory. He’s at ease with both his left and right feet. He also covers ground with surprising speed.

“Lunny has been excellent for the Rangers over the past few years, putting in a strong performance in numerous major games, including crucial ones in Europe. As a football player, he has a genuine demeanour that exudes steeliness.

He’s always talking, even though it can be challenging to understand his accent at times! You can match any central midfielder with Lunny. The fact that he was a player in the Premier League says it all. Reo Hatate is undoubtedly a superb midfield player for Celtic, but John can overcome him.”
