Four friends were killed in a horrific car crash yesterday that may have been caused by a pothole.

Driver John Aston was heading home from a night out with friends when he skidded off a wet road and smashed into a tree.

Friends Ed Smith and Michaela Michaela Favager, as well as a 43-year-old Jill Fowle, died at a notorious accident blackspot in Cheshire.

Residents have suggested a 12in-wide pothole less than 100 yards from the scene may have caused the vehicle to spin out of control.

The speed limit there has been reduced from 70mph to 40mph, but those living nearby said cars regularly travel at greater speed, especially at night.

The two men, aged 19 and 20, and two women, aged 19 and 43, died on impact, with one body thrown from the vehicle.
It is thought that the four, who were friends from Neston, Wirral, may have been returning home after a night out in Chester.

The accident took place on the A540 Chester High Road, near Neston, at about 2am on Sunday.

Cheshire police have confirmed that 20-year-old Mr Aston was at the wheel at the time of the accident.
