Kayla’s was seriously injured after a crash on her way to work

Dunmanway residents are coming together to show support for a young lady who was involved in a tragic vehicle accident while commuting to work.

In November, Kayla Shorten, 21, was travelling to her place of employment at a nearby pharmacy when she was involved in a terrible accident that resulted in life-altering injuries.

The West Cork woman spent weeks in intensive care, followed by months of treatment in hospital. Kayla was brought to The National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dublin in April where she is currently receiving care.

Kayla will continue treatment in Dublin until she is ready to return home to her family in August

The young woman’s friends and family have appealed for support as Kayla goes through a difficult few months of rehabilitation treatment. They have told of how the accident was a “huge blow” to the community.

After such a horrific accident and recovery, the wider West Cork community have come together to fundraise for her family to afford an adapted vehicle for Kayla once she comes home, and other expenses for her.

Kayla Shorten is described as “a much loved young woman with her kindness and wonderful sense of humour quickly making her a favourite to everyone she meets” by the Friends and Family of Kayla Shorten group, who have set up an online campaign for her family.

At the time of writing, the ‘Please help bring Kayla home’ fund has received almost €20,000 in donations and well-wishes.

“Her accident was a huge blow to her small community,” the family wrote. “The well wishes and kindness shown has been hugely appreciated by her and her family.

“Kayla still has a long way to go in her job, but she has already showed incredible bravery and courage on her journey. Getting Kayla home is the next major goal, and this is where you come in handy!

“To transport Kayla anywhere she might need to travel, Kayla’s family will need to purchase an adapted car. All funds will be used to pay for Kayla’s future requirements and expenses as well as the car. You cannot imagine how much we will appreciate your assistance.”
