  •  Coventry City faces a crucial transfer window to secure their future success – keep key players, add quality depth, and give the manager the tools needed.
  •  Alvyn Sanches offers versatility and goal-scoring prowess, making him a logical replacement for the departing Callum O’Hare in the attacking midfield role.
  •  Herbie Kane and Harrison Burrows are proven talents who could provide valuable options in the midfield and at left-back to help Coventry push for promotion next season.

Although Coventry City’s late slump in performance caused them to fall out of the play-off picture, Mark Robins’ Sky Blues battled valiantly on two fronts this season.

It was always going to be difficult to balance Coventry’s run in the FA Cup with their challenge for a spot in the Championship top six, and although they lost by the narrowest of margins in that competition, the team left their supporters with priceless memories.

The Coventry City 2024–25 campaign is expected to be defined by the impending transfer window. It is critical that the team turn down interest from the Premier League for their main players, sign quality rotation options to bolster the depth of the roster, and provide Robins with the resources he needs to make the necessary repairs to the team when holes eventually appear.

Before highlighting two smart transactions that could be made to strengthen the depth of the Sky Blues squad, FLW identifies one perfect, realistic signing that could have a revolutionary impact on Coventry City next season.

Alvyn Sanches

One of Swiss football’s most rapidly rising talents, Alvyn Sanches, is reportedly being noticed by Coventry. This season, Lausanne managed to survive in the Super League thanks in large part to the 21-year-old.

The midfielder has been most comfortable in the progressive number eight role, but he has also frequently been used as a second striker to bridge the gap between attack and midfield this season as Lausanne has struggled to score goals.

Sanches is elusive when it comes to the ball, having the ability to evade opponents and feel very at ease when receiving the ball in crowded areas.

The young player’s game has gained complexity as a result of being placed in an unusual offensive position. He had to take on the responsibility of scoring goals for Lausanne, which made him more clinical in front of goal.

Sanches is an appealing and sensible replacement for Callum O’Hare, who Coventry will have to let go of when his contract expires this summer, to cover the attacking midfield void he leaves behind.

As the season progressed, the Sky Blues appeared to lose momentum. Robins hopes to have the cover required when players sustain injuries and holes appear by investing in adaptable players who can play multiple positions.

According to reports, Lausanne has accepted Sanches’ departure this summer and has assessed their prize asset at £4.3 million. The Sky Blues will be up against competition from Scottish Champions Celtic and other teams.

In order to get him to sign, Coventry needs to ward off interest from across the border and move quickly.

Herbie Kane

Herbie Kane, a tenacious midfielder, has begun looking for new pastures after his contract with Barnsley expired.

During his tenure at Oakwell, the 25-year-old was a constant in the starting lineup, and this summer, he plans to advance to the Championship.

The Sky Blues are unsure of Ben Sheaf’s future due to mounting transfer rumours, so Robins needs to find a replacement this summer.

While Sheaf is a different kind of player entirely—a progressive playmaker recently connected to Fulham, Ipswich, and Luton—Kane and Josh Eccles could have a similar impact together.

Prior to the start of the following season, Coventry needs to bolster their midfield depth. If the team were to hang onto their star player, Kane would offer Sheaf a superior substitute.

Throughout the campaign, the Sky Blues will need to make investments in experienced players if they want to stay up with the promotion-chasing teams. The former Doncaster Rovers player may be a key player in helping the team cross the finish line.

Harrison Burrows

Exciting left-back Harrison Burrows deserves a return to the second division after a fantastic season with Peterborough United.

The 22-year-old upped his offensive capabilities this season and started to contribute significantly to the Posh’s creativity.

This season, he has racked up six goals and fourteen assists, regularly mauling opposition defences and bursting forward on the overlap.

Burrows would be a better option than Jay Dasilva, who Robins preferred over Jake Bidwell for a significant portion of the campaign.

His potential signing would, however, come at a hefty price. Coventry would have to submit a higher offer to acquire their star defender after Peterborough rejected a £5 million offer in 2022.

Nevertheless, money will need to be spent to acquire players who can win promotions as Robins continues to set itself up for success in the future.

Burrows could be a difference maker for Coventry the following season because he has all the qualities required to succeed in the Championship.
