Cronulla Sharks coach Craig Fitzgibbon has confirmed he wants more of his players in the NSW Blues State of Origin side, and suggested Cameron McInnes should be picked. The Sharks sit at the top of the NRL ladder after ten rounds of the competition having enjoyed a stunning nine and one start to the new season. Their win over the Melbourne Storm on Saturday evening was the latest tick for the club, who commenced the toughest stretch of their season to date with the game in the Victorian capital.

This year’s Origin series may feature several explosive players for the Sharks.

As it stands however, few Sharks players outside of Nicho Hynes – who actually missed the game against the Storm – are in the mix to be picked for the Origin arena.

Blayke Brailey and McInnes are two players who have been publicly linked to the team, but Jesse Ramien is the most prominent.

Fitzgibbon expressed his desire to see more of his players given the chance, though.

Fitzgibbon stated, “Of course we would [like to see more players in the Origin side],” at his post-match press conference following the victory over the Victorian team, who as of the end of Round 10 are ranked third on the NRL ladder.

“I believe that a variety of factors, including the experience they obtain and performing by the time they return, your team will benefit from their elite level.

“When players leave, there is some work to be done, but it’s well worth the effort because they learn from the experience, and who wouldn’t want to be able to coach an Origin player?

“I think it would be awesome for them, and I don’t think the way some of them are going that they’d let anyone down, put it that way.”

McInnes is a player who has never played for the Blues, despite consistently putting on great performances for his club team.

But since Cameron McInnes’ injury and the fact that New South Wales struggled to use a number 14 last year, the lock—who can also line up at dummy half—has entered the picture.

Fitzgibbon stated that you couldn’t ask for more than what McInnes will bring, and Michael Maguire pledged to select his side based on form.

“As far as Origin qualities go, what more do you want in a player?” Fitzgibbon enquired.

At that level, Cam is also capable of playing a few distinct roles. He’s been showing signs of Origin-like abilities for a while, so I’d love to see him get a chance.

“Ultimately, there is a selection process and we have to respect the fact that there are a number of candidates there, but I’d love to see him get a crack.”

Following Round 12, the Blues will select their team for Game 1.
