Now, Crystal Palace wants to sign Alex Berenguer, the No. 7 for Athletic Bilbao, this summer on a free transfer.

That’s what AS in Spain says.

What is the current state of affairs between Crystal Palace and Alex Berenguer? Let’s examine this.

Crystal Palace want Alex Berenguer

Dougie Freedman is reportedly keeping a careful eye on the Spaniard, who will depart Athletic Bilbao when his contract expires in July, according to AS.

Brentford and Wolves are also interested in Berenguer.

AS explains that in order to get ready for the 28-year-old’s summer departure, Athletic Bilbao has already recruited Alvaro Djalo in a €15 million (£13 million) transfer from Braga.

Since joining the Basque Country in October 2020 after signing a £10 million contract from Torino, Berenguer has grown to be a beloved player by the locals.

The Barañain native has made 159 appearances overall, contributing 19 assists and 27 goals. It is a testament to his popularity that, according to AS, supporters still yell for him during games, even after he decided to leave this summer.

Perhaps Berenguer’s best moment with Athletic Bilbao occurred during the 2021–2022 season when he won the Copa del Rey quarterfinal against Real Madrid with a spectacular goal in the 89th minute.

In 31 games this season across all competitions, the Spaniard has seven goals and three assists.

Dougie Freedman on red alert

Freedman has previously stuck gold with a free transfer from Spain when signing Vicente Guaita for nothing back in 2018.

Now, the Glaswegian could strike again with a clever move for Berenguer – who can play on either wing.

With Michael Olise’s future at Selhurst Park uncertain and Jeffrey Schlupp a shadow of his former self, Oliver Glasner has few attacking options on the flank.

Berenguer has played on the left side of the pitch this season, but he has also played on the right, so it would make sense for him to sign a free transfer.
