Liam Thompson, a Derby County midfielder, has been a consistent component of the Rams’ squad this season despite injuries.

Thompson, a young midfielder, appeared to have taken off early in the season before being sidelined by injuries. The academy graduate has now returned to the fold and has continued to impress, making 20 appearances across all competitions this season.
The 21-year-old came through the Rams’ junior system and signed a new two-year contract at Pride Park after the team was relegated to the third division. That contract expires in the summer, and Paul Warne’s team should act quickly to lock him down to a new agreement.
Following a season of impressive growth, Derby County fear losing the Englishman for nothing this summer. The risk of losing him to another EFL club is something the club must avoid, as his release would undoubtedly excite interest.
The Rams must work hard to keep him. He is a youthful star who has demonstrated his ability to play in the third tier while also gaining Championship experience.
Thompson rose through the youth ranks until making his breakthrough in the 2021/22 season, when he was named man of the match in a 3-2 victory over Bournemouth. The following season, he struggled to find playing time and was loaned out to Scunthorpe United, who were competing in the National League at the time.
The loan move was unsuccessful owing to injuries that limited his playing time, casting doubt on his future with the Rams. However, he returned with a point to prove throughout this campaign and has undoubtedly staked his claim for a new contract.
Thompson’s performances this season have demonstrated that, while he’s undoubtedly one for the future, he can also have a good impact in the present.
Derby County should prioritise extending Thompson’s contract this summer, regardless of their current division. Meanwhile, Warne’s team faces Wycombe Wanderers on Wednesday, and a win could bring them closer to a second-tier promotion.
