Paul Warne‘s side now need only a point in their final-day clash against Carlisle United to secure automatic promotion.

Behind the scenes, transfer plans will be drawn out in preparation for the reopening of the summer market, as numerous Rams players are set to leave at the conclusion of their contracts.

James Collins, who has 13 goals this season, is one player who could go for free at the end of June.

With that stated, here’s one ‘excellent’ goal machine Derby should bring in to replace Collins.

Barnsley forward Devante Cole has had a productive season with the promotion contenders, scoring 18 goals in 45 appearances.

Only Portsmouth’s Colby Bishop and Charlton Athletic’s Alfie May have scored more goals in the second tier this season.

Cole, the son of Manchester United icon Andy, is out of contract this summer and could be available for free transfer.

With Barnsley still aiming to return to the Championship, his future at Oakwell may depend on whether they advance through the play-offs.

The 28-year-old has improved significantly as a striker during his second term at Barnsley, and he will be eager to show himself at a higher level after getting a taste for it earlier in his career.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing has occasionally played as a centre forward this season, partnering Collins as a front two.

Mendez-Laing, who is naturally more creative, may build a strong bond with Cole – a willing runner in behind the last line of defence.

On paper, their characteristics would undoubtedly compliment one other well, therefore Warne should seriously consider making a bid for the Barnsley player, who would be a no-risk signing given his impending free transfer.

It would be a tempting idea to pair League One’s top assister with the third highest scoring player.

Admittedly, the move up to the Championship is significant, but both players have experience at that level.
