The Candystripes will be hoping to build on their opening-night victory over Drogheda at home this Saturday when they play Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds (KO 7.45).

In 2023, Ruaidhri Higgins’ team found it difficult to overcome the Bit o’ Red and lost both of their visits through Barnesmore Gap by a score of 1-0.

The Derry manager didn’t need to be reminded of this statistic, as he stated during his midweek press conference that his team was ready for another challenging match.

He stated, “It’s something we’ve discussed and definitely something we need to improve on.”

Ahead of the upcoming campaign, Sligo has added some outstanding players: Connor Malley, Ellis Chapman, Simon Power, and the returning Max Mata and Ed McGinty.

When we need to be strong, we must support ourselves, and if the football game is going to be exciting, we can do that too.

We should be able to bring a sizable group of people down with us, and it’s critical that they recognise our complete dedication.

We play in a really difficult league, and every side is more than capable. I know I’ll get bored of saying this.

The Limavady man recognised that plans had not yet been decided and that the match was still three days away in terms of team news.

Sadou Diallo is still out, but we have enough quality in the squad to handle these situations when they arise.

I thought we played some really good football against Drogheda last week, but we were also strong when we needed to be.

Let’s face it, if winning requires us to display our entire selves, then so be it.
