The body of a man believed to be convicted sex offender Richard Scatchard has been found in a caravan in across the border in Somerset, police have said

Just across the Devon border, the body of a man believed to be convicted sex offender Richard Scatchard, who vanished on October 16, has been found in a trailer. Due to his jail recall and for questioning in connection with Kelly Faiers’ death in Minehead in October of last year, Avon and Somerset Police had been chasing Scatchard.

On Thursday, April 4, the caravan at Cleeve Hill, Watchet, was discovered and reported to the police. Law enforcement officers believe the body belongs to 70-year-old Scatchard, who is believed to have gone away some time ago, even though formal identification has not yet been completed.

His death’s cause is being investigated as unexplained at this time, and a forensic post-mortem will be finished later. According to Major Crime Investigation Team Detective Superintendent Gary Haskins, there are no established suspicions regarding the circumstances of his death.

“Kelly’s family has been informed of the latest development and we will keep them, along with the family of Richard Scatchard, updated as our enquiries progress,” said DS Haskins. Kelly’s family is still receiving support from specialised family liaison officers throughout this trying time.

Although a forensic post-mortem examination will be conducted eventually, we think the man passed away some time ago. We will classify the man’s death as unexplained until that is finished, even though we are not currently aware of any suspicious circumstances.”

“We would like to thank those people who have responded to the appeals for information we have issued over the past five-and-a-half months and will continue to update the public as our enquiries progress.”
