The two teams played a 2-2 thriller, with Rovers leading at halftime by two goals thanks to scores from Joe Ironside and Luke Molyneux. The hosts recovered, however, and capitalised on Thimothee Lo-Tutala’s red card, with Tim Dieng scoring directly from a free kick before a Tom Anderson own goal restored parity.

The hosts may have won if it hadn’t been for a brilliant, late stop by replacement custodian Louis Jones, who helped Rovers save the point and clinch their place in the play-offs.

The Gills ended 12th, six points shy of the play-off places, bringing an up-and-down season to a close.
And Clemence, who was only promoted to his first managing position in November, has now paid the price, as the club confirmed his departure on Monday.
According to a press release: “Despite an improvement in performances and style of play, sadly results have not met the expectations set by the club and, as a result, the board believe a change is necessary to give the club the best possible chance of gaining promotion next season.”

In what turned out to be his final post-match interview following the draw with Grant McCann’s side, Clemence was asked about the pressure for next season and responded: “I am not naive. It’s my first time as head coach, but I’ve been involved since I was a young lad. “I understand that anything can happen in football.”
