What irritated Phil Parkinson the most about Wrexham’s loss to Doncaster Rovers last night has now been revealed.
In League Two, Wrexham had the opportunity to build a significant distance between themselves from the pursuit group.
The prize for defeating Doncaster Rovers was a five-point buffer over fourth-place MK Dons, but the hosts had other ideas.
The team led by Grant McCann entered this match with a four-game winning streak, which helped them move up the league standings. On Tuesday night, they would make it five.
Rovers’ goal in the 44th minute from Owen Bailey gave them all three points, although Wrexham was still in a commanding position two points ahead of the Dons despite having played one fewer game.
Following his team’s defeat at the Eco-Power Stadium, Phil Parkinson revealed the thing that irritated him the most.
Wrexham knew that a trip to in-form Doncaster had the potential to be a banana skin.
The hosts produced some incredible wins over the likes of Crewe Alexandra and Swindon Town.
However, after sweeping aside title rivals Mansfield Town on Good Friday, this was a chance for the Reds to move even closer to the title picture, and they blew it.
Parkinson watched Crewe, MK Dons and Barrow all drop points on Easter Monday, so there was a chance to leave the chasing pack behind, with the Wrexham boss left feeling frustrated about passing up this opportunity.
Speaking to Wrexham’s official YouTube channel, he said: “We had chances to make the keeper work and we didn’t take them and that is very frustrating because results went for us yesterday and there was a chance tonight to put a gap between ourselves and the chasing pack.”
Parkinson also touched on the Reds being wasteful in front of goal, often getting into a promising position but lacking a final ball or quality strike on goal.
Wrexham tend to let wastefulness creep into their game, and this was the case last night.
Despite recording 15 shots on goal, Parkinson’s men only landed one on target, as Rovers keeper Thimothee Lo-Tutala was called into action deep into stoppage time.
Substitute Steven Fletcher sent a powerful diving header low at the on-loan Hull City keeper, but he managed to get down fast to pull off a tremendous save and stop the visitors from snatching a point.
Parkinson was disappointed that his side didn’t test the 21-year-old on more occasions, as demonstrated by the above comments, with Wrexham next travelling to Colchester United on Saturday.
Hopefully, the Reds have their shooting boots on next weekend as they can ill-afford to drop more points with MK Dons breathing down their necks.
