Dominic Poleon, a striker for Ebbsfleet, thinks the team is winning now because it’s the perfect time of year.
With their second home victory in as many days, the Fleet defeated relegation rivals Woking 1-0 on Tuesday to extend their winning streak to four games.
As a player, it’s comforting to sense momentum, according to Poleon. “It’s actually a nice feeling right now, because when you don’t have it, you’re trying so hard to build it and it’s not falling for you or results don’t go your way.
We want to keep doing that because we can improve on it. We were in need of that Woking victory.
When a team undergoes a transition, as a player, all eyes are on you, and you have to deliver. We need to be putting points on the board and not getting carried away and starting to chip them off, especially given the situation we are in.
“Up until the past few weeks, we have not done ourselves any favours. For tonight, having that three-point feeling is nice.
“Success breeds contentment and confidence. Regardless of anything that has happened, it would be foolish to ignore that. Feel-good factors are bred by good outcomes.
“As a team, we must remain grounded; nothing has been accomplished thus far. We must remain focused and ensure that we continue taking these constructive actions and moving forward.”
Poleon scored his first goal in seven games against Woking in the first half, finishing with a signature move that beat visiting keeper Alexis Andre Jr.
The 14-goal striker has been having a difficult time lately because he had an attempt at Chesterfield cleared off the line and has been unlucky in other games.
Even though he’s glad to be back on the scoresheet, a more responsible Poleon understands that points are what matter right now, not who scores the goals.
Poleon said, “It happens as a striker, those other chances I’ve had on another day go in.”
“The young Dominic Poleon is furious and thinking, ‘I should hit it harder, whatever it is, how have I missed that, how has he saved that? But now that I’m a senior player, it’s all about the bigger picture, particularly given our current situation.
“When I play, I live by the maxim that I can’t get too high with the highs or too low with the downs.
While scoring goals is nice, winning and playing well are also nice sometimes.
“You could see my excitement when Raks (Rakish Bingham) scored earlier, and that’s where I am right now with the team and myself. I don’t really care all that much right now about who wins the games—Raks, Dom (Samuel), or me. Our goal is to win.
“I want to support the team and deliver strong performances. We just need to put wins on the board; we don’t have the luxury of having everyone score like we did last year.
“Although I’m happy that I scored, you have to try to combine the two in order to play well.
“I take great pride in having an opportunity like that. I wasn’t so lucky in the previous game. It was a nice finish because, as you know, I take pride in finishing.
