Jarrad Branthwaite, a rising star at Everton, is wanted, and Manchester United is in the lead this summer to sign the England Under-21 defender, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe being particularly interested.

Jarrad Branthwaite of Everton is Manchester United’s top summer transfer target.

Even if Erik ten Hag is fired as manager, United’s executives will move forward with their plan to sign the defender. Senior Old Trafford officials and new investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe have discussed a short list of targets.

Ratcliffe is eager to put money into younger players who can maximise United’s return on investment. Raphael Varane is anticipated to depart United this summer, and Harry Maguire’s long-term future is still uncertain.

Despite having only made 31 league appearances for Everton, 21-year-old Branthwaite has already established himself as one of the best players in English football. In October, he was rewarded with a new long-term contract at Everton that extends until 2027.

However, the Merseyside team could lose two more points before the season is out, which would mean they would be demoted from the Premier League.

The Goodison Park management will have to liquidate some of their prize assets, such as Branthwaite, if Everton loses. According to some reports, Everton will pay about £70 million for Branthwaite.

If Ratcliffe agrees to pay the requested amount, that is yet to be determined. However, he is aware that Branthwaite would find it difficult to decline a transfer to United as he attempts to advance to the next level.

After making six appearances for the England U21 team, Branthwaite is expected to make his senior squad debut later this week under Gareth Southgate.
