Yamil Asad, a midfield player, has signed with FC Cincinnati, effective for the 2024–2025 season, with a 2025 option. With D.C. United and Atlanta United, Asad, 29, has made 122 MLS games and has tallied 21 goals and 26 assists.
Asad played for D.C. United in the nation’s capital for portions of four of the previous six seasons. He played for the Black-and-Red in 26 games in all competitions in 2023. He made nine starts, including two in the U.S. Open Cup, where he scored the game-winning goal for D.C. against the Richmond Kickers in the third round.
Yamil is a valuable addition to FC Cincinnati with his wealth of experience and skill, according to General Manager Chris Albright. “I’d like to welcome him to the club. He’s a creative and versatile player who will fit well with our group.”
Over the course of his three spells with the team, Asad made 98 appearances for D.C., including 31 games in 2018 alongside fellow national Luciano “Lucho” Acosta. Together, the two scored six goals for the D.C. offence.
The Argentinean native, who is from San Antonio de Padua, attended Club Atletico Vélez Sarsfield Academy. His father, Omar Asad, was a former player for Vélez Sarsfield and won eight trophies in the Argentina Primera División and one Copa Libertadores.
In April 2013, Asad made his Club Atletico Vélez Sarsfield senior debut. On February 21, 2015, he scored his first goal in football during a 2-1 victory over Club Mutual Crucero del Norte. With Vélez Sarsfield, the midfield player appeared in 57 games and contributed five assists.
Asad was signed by Atlanta United to a season-long loan in January 2017, just before the Five Stripes’ first Major League Soccer campaign. In Atlanta’s season opener on March 5, 2017, against the New York Red Bulls, Asad scored the team’s first goal ever. In their first season, he would lead the squad with 13 assists and score seven goals.
Asad made his debut with D.C. United before the 2018 campaign began, and on July 14 against the Vancouver Whitecaps, he scored the first goal ever at Audi Field. Following his 2019 return to Vélez Sarsfield, he re-signed with D.C. prior to the 2020 campaign, spending the following two years with the team. Asad joined Club Deportivo Universidad Católica in Chile in 2022, and he played for the Primera División team there for 20 outings.
