The discord between the two former Ireland managers stems from Brian Kerr’s criticism of Stephen Kenny when the latter was the manager of the country.
In response to Stephen Kenny’s remark about a “cup of tea,” Brian Kerr has stated that he hasn’t shared a drink with the new St Patrick’s Athletic manager in 25 years.

Speaking on Virgin Media prior to the Shelbourne vs. St Pat’s derby, Kerr addressed remarks made by Kenny during his unveiling last Thursday.

“I don’t think we’ll be getting together for cups of tea or coffee, but he (Kerr) attends the games and that’s a big part of his life,” the new Saints manager stated.

Kerr responded to the comments, having previously criticised Kenny while he was Ireland’s manager.

“Actually, he stated he wouldn’t go for a cup of tea or coffee; I’ve never had coffee in my life,” he remarked.

“I brought Stephen in to see what the international game was like the last time I had a cup of tea with him, which was 25 years ago in Israel when he was playing for Longford.

“I’ve had plenty of conversations with Stephen, but we haven’t had a cup of tea together since.”

Kerr was present at Richmond Park for Virgin Media’s live coverage of the match on Monday. He was seen having a lengthy conversation in the centre circle prior to kickoff with Reds manager Damien Duff.

Kerr expressed his optimism that Kenny would succeed at Pat’s.

“Well, you know, it went pretty well at the five League of Ireland clubs he managed before, it didn’t go well at Shamrock Rovers,” he remarked.

“You would hope it goes well; he has a five-and-a-half year contract. In my ten years as manager here, we had some success but also some difficult games. I never had a contract.

“It’s a progressive move for the club to get someone who has managed so well in this league before and has an international background.”

“All I want is for Stephen to lead the team back to victory and put them back in the running for trophies.”

He also said that he would be available for advice at all times.

“I’ve undoubtedly always supported every manager here; I’ve never voiced criticism towards any of them. I would be here to help if he ever needed it, Kerr said.

“I support this club, it’s the only League of Ireland club I’ve managed, so that’s his call.” Stephen has six clubs total. I’m hoping he succeeds.
