It is the second time the 34-year-old has strained his hamstring this year, after also suffering the same injury in Round 2 against Adelaide.

Geelong have confirmed captain Patrick Dangerfield will miss up to six weeks with his hamstring injury.

Dangerfield limped off during the third quarter of the Cats’ win over Carlton on Saturday.

The week prior to the Blues match, he was out of action for three games prior to playing North Melbourne again.

However, the club will go cautiously this time, setting a four-to six-week schedule.

The unblemished Cats, who play fellow top-four contenders Melbourne, Port Adelaide, and GWS Giants in the coming month, have suffered a severe blow.

“The injury that Pat has sustained is comparable to the one that caused him to miss 21 days earlier in the season,” said Brett Johnson, associate general manager of football for Geelong.

“We will continue to take a prudent approach to his recovery and return to play, given that the injury is to the same leg.

“At this point, Pat will miss four to six weeks due to preparation for the second half of the season. However, as he progresses through his training programme, we will reevaluate his progress and the timeline for his return to the lineup.”

Dangerfield was made to explain the team’s significant preseason workout modification, which was intended to “bullet-proof hamstring.”

In a February podcast episode, “We’ve changed from three main sessions a week, to two main sessions,” he stated.

We’ve significantly accelerated our high speed, which is the cause behind that. We are no longer the same. For myself, I’ve surpassed 450 odd metres in terms of top speed. The top speed exceeds 24 miles per hour.

“The goal is to try and bulletproof your hamstrings, so when you play games, it should feel almost like a de-load.”

But concerns were raised over whether the training modification had an effect after sustaining two hamstring problems in the course of seven rounds.

Depending on how you look at it, might the injury have been considerably worse if I hadn’t done that work? You’re ignorant,” he remarked on Monday.

Better news for the Cats: vice captain Tom Stewart, who missed last week’s game against Melbourne due to a concussion, will be back for Saturday night’s match.
