While firemen battled a car fire, a main thoroughfare was shut down.

An image captured at the site shows the car completely destroyed by flames after exploding into a ball of fire in Gillingham’s Pier Road early this evening.

The blaze broke out on a section of the A289 near the Strand Roundabout at around 6.30pm.

One fire engine attended to find the vehicle ablaze with both its boot and bonnet open.

Around 6.30 p.m., a fire started on a portion of the A289 close to the Strand Roundabout.

When one fire engine arrived, the car was on fire and had its bonnet and boot open.
While the scene was being made safe, the road was briefly closed.

Drivers trying to avoid the situation, including automobiles turning around to avoid the collision, reported heavy traffic heading towards Rainham.

“Saw this when I was cycling past it, omg was lots of black smoke in the sky hope everyone is ok not hurt,” wrote one rider who had passed the fire in an online comment.

As of now, the fire’s source is unknown.

The firefighters departed the scene just after 7:30 p.m.
