Town put up a strong fight and appeared to be a more cohesive team as they drew 1-1 with Morecambe on Saturday. However, the team directly below them, Forest Green Rovers, who they play at home the following weekend, pulled closer with a rare victory.
After the crucial match on Saturday, there are still plenty of games to play, but a lot is riding on this one, especially psychologically for Grimsby, who have struggled in front of their home crowd in previous games.
With the team’s resilience and organisation off the ball against Morecambe, Artell achieved half of his goals for the team’s performance; however, the team’s next task is to “marry” their strong defensive play with daring offensive play.
The Mariners head coach said: “If we show that kind of resilience without the ball and marry that up with what we know we can do with it, then we’ll be alright. We’ve made sure this week that we’re much harder to beat, blocking shots, and areas to press and not to press, so we’ve got to get that balance right now.
“It is a big game next week, there is no denying that, but the result in that game won’t define our season, although a win would be handy. We’ve got to make sure that we translate our away form to what we do at home, and that has to start [against Forest Green].”

“[The meetings] provide a clarity and understanding of where we are,” Artell continued. We’ve held open and sincere discussions with the players as well as meetings with the owners and other stakeholders.
In that regard, we had a successful and productive week leading up to Morecambe. It is undeniable that everyone at this club cares about the club, but that doesn’t mean that it will solve all of our issues.
We need to reflect that passion and the open discussions that have occurred, and I believe we did so [against Morecambe]. Although I understand that everyone is concerned when they see the league table, I have faith in these players and our efforts, and I know we will succeed in due course.
