Grimsby Town boss send close safety message after big win at Crewe Alexandra

The Mariners’ emphatic victory over play-off hopefuls Crewe has just about secured their Football League status

With goals from Toby Mullarkey, Curtis Thompson, and Denver Hume, Grimsby Town easily defeated play-off contender Crewe Alexandra 3-0, almost securing their Football League survival.

With two games remaining, Sutton is in second place, six points behind the Mariners, who have a considerably better goal differential than United.

When Justin Obikwu was put clear in the area, the visitors had an early opportunity, but the striker waited too long to size up the goal, and Lewis Billington’s intervention allowed the shot to go past the post.

Crewe goalkeeper Max Stryjek was at fault when Doug Tharme’s long-throw was headed on by Mullarkey with the keeper pushing the ball weakly into the air and then unable to prevent it creeping over the line in the 38th minute.

Just before the hour mark, Thompson volleyed home Charles Vernam’s outswinging corner from the edge of the box to give the Mariners a two goal lead.

Crewe’s reply was mild, though Jake Eastwood had to move evasively to save Nevitt’s block on his clearance from going over the line. In the last moments, the Town keeper performed admirably to deny an attempt from Charlie Finney.

However, Hume, a replacement, completed the Mariners’ afternoon by finishing into the far corner following Donovan Wilson’s cut of the ball across the box.
