Grimsby Town landed the full-back on loan during the January transfer window and he has been an excellent star since his arrival.

Smith, 28, sees his contract with his parent club expire at the end of June.

GloucestershireLive claim he is poised to head out the exit door following the Robins’ relegation from League One.

Grimsby Town loanee poised to leave

The door could swing open for Grimsby Town to land Smith on a free transfer and they have a decision to make. He was brought in this past winter on a temporary basis to bolster their defensive department.

After a fruitful trial, he was signed by Cheltenham Town last summer, and he played for them for 15 games in the first half of the current season before moving to Blundell Park.

Prior to making 38 appearances for Hearts in his early career, Smith played for both Rangers and Hearts as a young player. He also had loan spells at East Fife, Raith Rovers, and St Mirren.

After that, he spent long stints at Dundee United and Ayr United before making his first cross-border trip last year.

Although his stint at Cheltenham Town didn’t exactly go as planned, he now has more game time and confidence thanks to his move to Grimsby Town.

After losing against Crawley Town on the last day of play, Artell’s team ended the season in 21st place, seven points above the relegation zone.
