Callum Ainley, a midfielder for Grimsby, will need time to heal after surgery after receiving a thyroid cancer diagnosis.
The 26-year-old, who came to the Mariners from Crewe in the summer, may resume training in mid- to late-February if everything goes according to plan.
“Callum has shown great strength of character since he received the news and he is currently being supported by the club to ensure he has everything he needs,” Grimsby stated in a statement.
“At this time, we would like to ask that supporters and the media respect his privacy.
“We hope Callum heals quickly. We anticipate seeing him again soon, this time in a black and white shirt.”
