Head coach Andre Breitenreiter was unable to save Huddersfield Town from relegation to League One
Andre Breitenreiter, the head coach of Huddersfield Town, acknowledges that he needs “time to reflect” before he can decide whether to stay with the team after their relegation.
On Saturday, the Terriers’ destiny was confirmed on the last day of the season as they lost 2-0 at Ipswich Town. With their win, Ipswich Town was promoted to the Premier League.
With 45 points from 46 games played, Town finished the season second from the bottom and will now compete in League One for the first time since 2012.
Breitenreiter stated he needed “some days” to determine if he wants to take on the assignment, although acknowledging that Town needs a “total reset” after their relegation.
We have these talks over the course of the next week. After the game on Saturday, the head coach of Leeds FC said to BBC Radio Leeds, “The owner came over to England, so we had some conversations and then we had to think about the whole thing, about the project.”
“After the season, I can respond to you, but not today. It’s too early.” After we make a decision for the future, I want to think back on the previous few weeks.
“I value the discussions we’ve had the entire time. We remained in close proximity to one another, as did Kevin Nagle, Mark Cartwright, and Jake Edwards. We discuss every aspect in our private chats, which have been going on for the past few weeks. After that, I have to decide whether or not I’m the ideal person for the project, as does the club. We need to have some discussions in order to discover what is feasible for the upcoming season.
I must take some time to think. Again, I enjoy the chats, but to be honest, I’m not usually the coach for the third league since I’m used to [playing] international with my teams. Normally, I wouldn’t want to work on the project, but I consider it because there are a lot of people in Huddersfield that I value.
“I need a few days to make the decision and have the conversations.” It is evident that it requires a complete overhaul and fresh start in a plethora of areas, both on and off the pitch. I’d like to know how to alter a lot of things completely.
“We study the entire season first, then we have talks, and finally, it’s me. The club and everyone involved need to consider me, the project, and who would be the best fit for each position. In addition to talking to my wife, friends, and family, I must also consider my future professional move.
After taking over as head coach in February, Breitenreiter was unable to keep the Terriers from dropping out of the standings, as the team finished the season with two victories, five ties, and six losses.
The manager of the Terriers voiced his displeasure with the team’s relegation. “I regret that I was unable to stay,” he remarked in the league.
“I truly want to thank everyone of my supporters and followers; I sincerely appreciate the words I received. It’s abnormal for the environment to be so supportive of my individual after you’ve been demoted.
“Maybe my criticism is harsh at times, but I’m always honest, and I think this was the ideal time to speak up so that everyone understood that this club needed a fresh start. That’s all I have to say for now. We will now return to Huddersfield and consider our options.
Following the team’s loss on Saturday, Kevin Nagle, the owner of the Terriers, revealed that he had met with Breitenreiter on Friday night and that the head coach “has a big decision to make” regarding his future with the team.
“Had a great meeting with Andre last night. He has a big decision to make, and quickly, which I respect. A lot of work in front of us and I’m more than ready to get started. Thanks to all the supporters that made the trip (to Portman Road). Big off-season ahead. Will speak more in detail in the coming days,” the owner wrote on X.
