In order to defeat Hull FC and deny the Black and Whites their first Super League victory since Round Three, Castleford Tigers overcame a scare.

A victory would have completed an incredible week for Hull FC off the pitch following the hiring of new head coach John Cartwright, who will serve a three-year contract beginning with the 2020–21 campaign. Additionally, they have signed deals of the same duration with upcoming talents like Logan Moy during the past week.

Even though there was a late comeback, Craig Lingard’s Castleford team managed to cling on for a third Super League victory, winning 30–22.

With the loss against Cas and a crushing Challenge Cup loss against Leigh Leopards thrown in for good measure, Hull FC has now dropped nine straight Super League games. It’s ironic that former Hull player Tex Hoy was responsible for the Cas defeat.
Brad Fash was substituted for a head injury assessment, and although the forward would later pass it, Hull FC had a disastrous start. Simon Grix’s team had already conceded two tries through Liam Horne and the outstanding Hoy.

Both tries were initiated by breaks from inside the Tigers’ half, and Cas lived up to the nickname “Classy Cas.” Nevertheless, FC was able to stop the momentum before scoring a response. After that, Rowan Milnes clung to his own kick, and Liam Sutcliff’s intercept try made sure the Tigers were only ahead 18–10 at halftime.

Once more, Castleford got off to the fastest start at the resumption, scoring tries through Corey Hall and Jason Qareqare, two right-edge players, that looked to have eliminated the game.

It was a nerve-wracking finale with to late goals from Wigan loanee Tiaki Chan and Jake Trueman, but Castleford managed to hold on and further hurt Hull FC’s 2024 season.

Despite a late comeback that saw Craig Lingard’s Castleford team win their third straight Super League game, the on-field success was not to come.

Hull FC suffered severe losses in the opening half of the match, as 18 of their thirty points were scored in the first 10 minutes of each forty minutes. As a result, interim coach Simon Grix has urged his team to “learn faster.”

He discussed the necessity for his team to grow up with BBC Humberside after the game. describing how, in the first half, the team “blinked first” when going set for set.

There were, however, harsher evaluations of the situation from Hull FC supporters, one of which criticised all players but a select few for lacking “fight.”

“Big Johnny Carts has a big job to do, aside from Herman, Fash, Trueman, and the young lads, nobody showed fight,” they contended.

Herman Ese’ese is scheduled to appear before an Operational Rules Tribunal on Tuesday night over a charge of “verbal abuse,” so things could yet get worse.

One fan remarked, “Shouldn’t take to the last 15 to come alive however in attack, we look a lot better with Reynolds in it but defensive still needs a lot of improvement,” in response to Grix’s statement that they needed to “learn faster.”

Another fan said, “Only started playing when it was game over,” and another said, “Showed fight at the end but what about the other 70 minutes.” Grix had previously accused his team of “dipping their toe in.”

Even more pessimistic, a different fan posted: “I thought we might have competed tonight.” Unfortunately, I’m not. I find it difficult to see what we do in between games other than send press releases about 2025.
