The Courier Mail, an Australian newspaper, has revealed that Hull FC has signed NRL assistant coach John Cartwright.
Rugby League Live broke the story initially in the UK, but the Courier Mail now reports that Cartwright has inked a three-year contract to take over at the MKM Stadium.
Cartwright and Hull FC had “conversations,” according to a reliable source close to the publication, but now
Cartwright is Michael Maguire’s assistant coach with the New South Wales Blues, who play the Queensland Maroons next week in Australia’s notorious State of Origin Series.
The 58-year-old has previously served as an assistant coach with the Sydney Roosters, North Queensland Cowboys, and Manly Sea Eagles in addition to coaching the Penrith Panthers’ reserve grade.
Although he was the first head coach of the Gold Coast Titans and toured England with the Kangaroos in 1990, he is currently the backup to Kevin Walters at the Brisbane Broncos.
Early in April, Hull FC fired head coach Tony Smith. Simon Grix, who was serving as an interim replacement, was reportedly eager to take over as head coach permanently.
