A man who kept a pair of scissors in his cell at HMP Kilmarnock has been sentenced to 18 further months in prison.
On April 2, John Paul Thomson, 32, of Cheriot Way, Irvine, entered a guilty plea to a single charge at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court.
Thomson’s involvement in a robbery attempt in Crosshouse led to the imposition of a seven and a half year prison sentence.
According to the evidence presented in court, on February 17, 2022, he was incarcerated in A-hall when officers searched his shared cell in response to information they had received.
Under his mattress, officers found two scissors with blades that measured about four inches.
The court was informed by Thomson’s attorney that he could not provide much mitigation. He acknowledged that Thomson should have told the cops that the scissors were part of a barber set that he had received.
Sheriff Nicola Patrick sentenced the defendant, saying, “Your history of violence with blades and weapons is appalling.” I can only deal with you verbally. There is no other way.
He received an 18-month prison sentence.
