Following a ‘act of unjustified violence’, a man was discovered dead on the floor, prompting British Transport Police to open a murder inquiry.

Officers were dispatched to the Harold Wood railway station just after 4.30 a.m. today when a staff member saw a seriously injured person laying on the ground.

The victim was discovered at the scene with serious injuries, and despite the best efforts of the London Ambulance Service and Metropolitan Police, the victim was declared dead.

Since then, a man has been detained by police in relation to this and is still there this morning.

The Elizabeth Line stop at Harold Wood will be closed for the remainder of the day.

Police are seen putting up a forensic tent and imposing a cordon around the entrance of the railway station in footage taken earlier this morning.

Detective Chief Inspector Sam Blackburn declared, “This was a despicable act of unprovoked violence.”

Even though we are confident that this was an isolated incident, the inquiry is still in its early stages, thus the station will stay closed until we look into it further.

We are asking anyone who saw the incident or can help us piece together what happened beforehand to text 61016 or give us a call at 0800 40 50 40 and mention reference 53 of 27/02/24. Alternatively, you can make an anonymous call to Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.

Additionally, National Rail has reported that “an ongoing incident close to the railway in the Harold Wood area is being handled by the emergency services.” No trains are able to call at Harold Wood station as the station has been closed to enable them to complete their work.
