Man jailed 18 years for murder in Kilmarnock..

A man has been sentenced for a further 18 months after storing a pair of scissors in his cell at HMP Kilmarnock.

John Paul Thomson, 32, of Cheriot Way, Irvine, pleaded guilty to one charge at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court on April 2.

Thomson is currently serving a seven-and-a-half-year sentence in jail for his role in an attempted robbery in Crosshouse.

The court heard that on February 17, 2022, he was held within A-hall in the prison and officers searched his shared cell based on intelligence gathered.

Officers located a pair of scissors beneath his mattress, with blades measuring roughly four inches long.

Thomson’s lawyer informed the court that he had little mitigating to provide. He stated that Thomson obtained the scissors as part of a barber set and acknowledges that he should have told officers of this.

Sheriff Nicola Patrick sentenced the defendant, saying, “Your record of violence with blades and weapons is horrendous.” There is no way I can deal with you other than through a sentence.”

He was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment.
