An unstable sign has forced a major Kilmarnock road to close as strong winds batter Ayrshire.

Road Major Kilmarnock closed because of an unsafe sign as a school experiences a power outage with strong winds
Today, Queens Drive, which is close to the Odeon theatre, was reduced to one lane.

As crews work to repair a sign that is threatening to fall, the entire stretch of road from Victoria Roundabout between Queen’s Drive and Lawson Street is closed today.

It is understood the sign was part of the old Frankie & Benny’s restaurant near to the Odeon cinema complex.

A picture from the scene shows a crane supporting the sign with cones and tape sectioning off a lane on the road.

It comes amidst a Yellow warning for wind that is active until 5pm today.

Ayrshire Road Alliance confirmed the closure and said that police were also in attendance at the sign.

Elsewhere Loudon Academy was forced to close due to a power cut affecting the KA4 area.

The secondary school closed at 1.30pm to pupils with East Ayrshire Council confirming the closure on social media.
