Four others are in hospital after the smash
Both sides of the motorway were closed to allow emergency services, including the air ambulance, to access the scene. The collision is believed to have involved one vehicle.
Thousands of motorists were caught up in the tailbacks on the first working day of the school summer holidays. Traffic trapped between the two junctions was gradually released past the scene.
Lancashire Police said yesterday in a statement: “We received a report of a collision involving one vehicle between junction 32 and 33 of the M6 at around 2pm today. A man has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.
“A hospital has been notified about the injuries of four additional individuals. Between junctions 32 and 33, the motorway is closed in both directions. We will provide you with an update as soon as we can.”
Around 7:20 p.m. yesterday, the M6 reopened in its entirety. Police are asking anyone with any footage or information to call 101 and provide log 0814 of July 22.
