Despite numerous reports over the past month or so to the contrary, it now seems that Paul Rowley will not be the next coach of Leeds Rhinos.

When Ian Blease became the new sporting director for the Rhinos, joining from Salford Red Devils, the rumours started to solidify. In his first week at the club, he dismissed Rohan Smith – seemingly leaving the path open.

Blease signed after seven-and-a-half years in his role with hometown side, Salford – a time in which he was instrumental to bringing Rowley to the club.

He joined Brodie Croft and Andy Ackers in moving to Headingley from the Red Devils – two players he sold for significant sums.

Speaking in a club press conference a few weeks ago, Blease even confirmed the club were interested, saying: “Talented coaches interest me, Paul will be one of them obviously. His name has been planted about by you guys for a while now.”

The Rhinos, according to Blease, are nearing the end of their search – and Rowley likely won’t be the one to come out of it as head coach.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ The Verdict today, Jon Wilkin revealed: “There are strong rumours that Paul Rowley fancied it and that he’s out of the race now, he’s settled at Salford and wants to complete maybe the project or what he’s been doing, I’m not sure if that’s accurate or not.”
