Rushworth is presently on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion to Championship club Swansea City, where he has yet to miss a league game this season.
The shot-stopper has nine clean sheets this season and has been in fantastic form for the Swans. He is apparently in line to win the Swansea Player of the Year title, and his outstanding achievements have not gone ignored by the national squad.
Martyn Margetson, England’s custodian coach, coaches Rushworth at the Welsh side, and the 22-year-old could be called up to the Euro 24 squad.
Rushworth’s chances have been boosted further by the troubles of those who would ordinarily play backup to England’s number one Jordan Pickford.
Aaron Ramsdale at Arsenal has had to play second fiddle to David Raya, and Newcastle United’s Nick Pope has been out injured since December.
Crystal Palace’s Sam Johnstone is sidelined for the season, while Burnley’s 21-year-old James Trafford, who has frequently kept Rushworth out of the England Under-21 goal, has lost his spot at the Premier League strugglers.
These issues have pushed the former Lincoln City loanee up the pecking order for a spot in the team that will travel to Germany.
Prior to his time at the Swansea.com Stadium, Rushworth thrived during loan periods with Walsall in League Two and Lincoln City in League One, where he kept 19 clean sheets last season.
Carl Rushworth is an exceptional custodian. He has excellent reflexes and is quite calm and confident when playing the ball out with his feet.
If Pickford and Ramsdale are fit, England boss Gareth Southgate will make them his first choice tandem. This is despite the fact that Arsenal’s custodian does not play regular minutes.
The injuries and loss of starting positions for the other English goalkeepers present an intriguing opportunity for Rushworth to join the squad as the third keeper.
