After a long time, Liverpool lost to another London club this season.

Since the Tottenham loss was disputed, you’d have to go back to last season when Jurgen Klopp saw his players make mistakes and look off.

Gabriel Martinelli scored after Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk miscommunication on Liverpool’s penalty area, which the Arsenal man gladly accepted.

According to Premier League Productions (04/02/24 at 6:40 pm), Michael Owen and Ian Wright said the goalkeeper should have cleared the ball.

Neither player did anything other than let the ball bounce and watch Gabriel Martinelli score again to give the home side the lead.

Liverpool weren’t at their best at the Emirates, but they were level after an hour and had every chance to win.

Arsenal took advantage of that occasion and increased to their lead in stoppage time when substitute Leandro Trossard scored.

Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker swap
“It shouldn’t happen, it’s definitely a mistake,” Owen remarked. “I blamed Alisson. Choosing a player.

Listen, you can blame them both in many ways. Virgil van Dijk could lead this. He could head it but lets it bounce.

“If Alisson stays on his line, he controls everything. He rules. He enjoys one-on-one. Faster and stronger. “He’s goal side and absolutely in control, just don’t come out and leave him to it, then Alisson comes out and half collides and none of them touch it, so I think it’s more Alisson’s fault than van Dijk’s.”

Wright said, “If Alisson doesn’t come, Gabriel Martinelli can’t get on that side of Virgil. He won’t go there, but seeing Alisson and getting the nudge has confounded everything. The goalkeeper needed to communicate more.”

Liverpool help Arsenal win.
Liverpool’s FA Cup late win over Arsenal had home fans worried about a repeat.

Mikel Arteta’s team was better, although the scoreboard was different before that blunder.

Liverpool would have benefited from that, but Alisson and van Dijk opened that title door.

This makes things very exciting and cuts Liverpool’s lead at the top to two points.
