Liverpool will have a new manager in place by the end of the season, and Xabi Alonso is the early contender to succeed Jurgen Klopp.

Xabi Alonso, the manager of Bayer Leverkusen, has emerged as the leading candidate to follow Jurgen Klopp in the Liverpool dugout.

The German club leads the Bundesliga by two points over their nearest competitors, Bayern Munich. Since the Reds manager’s surprise announcement seven days ago, the former midfielder has been the subject of much speculation as a potential successor.

Klopp has maintained that the final 16 Premier League games are not a farewell tour, and they are eager to add to their stunning trophy cabinet. In addition to their chase of the English Premier League, the Reds have already reached one domestic cup final, against Chelsea in the Carabao showpiece later this month, as well as the fifth round of the FA Cup and the Europa League elimination stages.

The end of the road for the former Borussia Dortmund and Mainz boss has begun with victories over Norwich City and Wednesday’s destruction of Chelsea, which restored their five-point advantage at the top.

While the clock ticks down for Klopp and Liverpool fans, some attention has already been focused on who will be given the keys to a squad brimming with power and confidence.

Alonso broke his social media blackout this week, marking the first time since Klopp’s announcement. As expected, Liverpool supporters dominated the comments.

The former midfielder was celebrating the revival of a legendary football boot, the Adidas Predators, and fans were quick to use their freedom to persuade him to return to Anfield, with a large number of Reds fans commenting in the section.
