A deadly two-vehicle collision is being looked into by the Gardai. It happened on Sunday at 8.50 a.m. on the R166 near Annagassan in Dunleer.

Two vehicles crashed in Co Louth, resulting in the death of one man and serious injuries to another.

It happened this morning at approximately 8:50 a.m. on the R166 near Annagassan in Dunleer.

One car’s driver, a guy in his 60s, was declared deceased at the site. A post-mortem will be conducted in the mortuary at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda after his body was taken.

The woman in her 40s who was operating the second vehicle was transported by air to the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, where she is undergoing treatment for severe injuries.

The road remains closed for a forensic collision investigation with local diversions in place.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to contact them. A Garda spokeswoman said: “Gardaí are investigating a fatal road traffic collision that occurred at approximately 8.50am this morning Sunday 14th July, 2024 in Dunleer, Co. Louth. The collision involved two cars and it occurred on the R166 at Annagassan, Dunleer, Co. Louth.

“The driver of the first car, a man aged in his 60s, was pronounced deceased at the scene. His body has been removed from the scene to the Mortuary in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda. A post mortem will take place in due course.

“The driver of the second car, a female aged in her 40s, was airlifted from the scene to the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, where she is receiving treatment for her serious injuries.

“The road remains closed this at this time with an examination by Forensic Collision Investigators currently under way. Local diversions remain in place.

“Any witnesses to this collision are urged to come forward by the Gardaí. Road users who were travelling in the vicinity during the collision and possess camera footage, including dash cam footage, are kindly requested to provide Gardaí with this evidence.
