The harshest sentence ever for death by reckless driving was given to a driver who killed two people when they drove a stolen van down the M25 in the wrong direction.
After driving down a major motorway without a licence in a stolen car, Barancan Nurcin, 22, was given an 18-year prison sentence.
Zoe Hawes, a passenger, was killed when the van collided with a silver DFSK 580 Glory. She was travelling to Luton Airport with her spouse to celebrate her 40th birthday.
Mrs. Hawes, 39, of Essex passed away at the scene, while her husband was hospitalised in a medically induced coma after suffering severe facial injuries, shattered bones throughout his body, and bleeding in the brain.
Sedatives caused him to lose his memory, so he had to be reminded over and over again that his loving wife had passed away.
A silver Skoda Superb and a black Peugeot 5008 collided with the collision’s debris, injuring five individuals in all.
And Nurcin took off, leaving his 23-year-old pal Fahad Dek dead in the passenger seat.
Police received a report of a stolen white Citroen Dispatch vehicle at approximately 3:40 a.m. on February 4. When they saw the stolen van driving south on the M1, they ordered a police chase after it did not stop.
After a short while, the vehicle recklessly turned into an emergency access road from the main carriageway and returned to the motorway, this time in the direction of oncoming traffic.
Officers then noticed the vehicle near Hemel Hempstead’s Breakspear Way, but it once more sped away from them.
Police noticed the van a short while later, going on the incorrect side of the M25.
About 4:08 a.m., there was a collision.
After officers found Nurcin in the area, he was rushed to the hospital with severe injuries. While there, he was apprehended and then placed under arrest.
It was soon discovered that his driver’s licence had previously been suspended following an event in 2021 in which he was found to be under the influence of drugs.
On March 26, Nurcin, a resident of Tottenham, entered a guilty plea to two charges of driving dangerously and causing death, as well as to charges of driving while unlicensed, causing death without insurance, and four counts of driving dangerously and causing serious injury.
and was sentenced to 18 years in jail at St Albans Crown Court on June 21.
“Although nothing can make up for the pain Nurcin has caused, I am pleased with today’s result,” stated RPU Chief Inspector Steve O’Keeffe. Due to Nurcin’s acts, two innocent persons have died in tragic circumstances.
“The pain and suffering he has inflicted have also wrecked many more lives. It is impossible to overestimate the impact of this horrific tragedy, and my thoughts are with the families of the victims.
The life of Zoe Hawes, a cherished grandmother and mother, was brutally taken away by Nurcin. For a considerable amount of time, Zoe’s spouse will need intense therapy to help with cognitive, communicative, and motor skills. At the moment, one of his eyes is blind.
At the age of twenty-three, Fahad Dek with his whole life ahead of him. He was described by his family as a pillar of strength and they dearly miss him.
The fact that Nurcin abandoned Fahad in the car while attempting to avoid the police says a lot about his moral fibre.
Nurcin had numerous chances to pull over securely for the cops. Rather, he disregarded our police and made the inexplicable choice to drive in the direction of oncoming traffic, so endangering the public.
“I hope that today’s outcome helps ease the suffering of everyone impacted by Nurcin’s dangerous and completely self-centered actions.”
