Troy Deeney, the manager of Forest Green Rovers, was fired just one day after Maxi Oyedele joined the ailing team on loan from Manchester United, the Premier League’s most successful club.

“Tough love” advocates have had a rather difficult week, to say the least.

Troy Deeney was also given his P45, which brought an immediate end to a short-lived managerial reign that will be remembered most for his abrasive, fork-tongued, post-match lambasting of his Forest Green charges. This revelation came approximately 72 hours after former Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho paid the price for a dismal run of Serie A form and another Roma derby defeat to Lazio.

However, it is possible that Maxi Oyedele would be better off without a manager who is so harsh in his criticism of his own players that it would make Mourinho appear to be rather kind.

This past week, the promising young player from Manchester United joined the struggling team from League Two on loan. This came just one day before Deeney was fired.

“Maxi is a wonderful talent. We’re extremely lucky to have him here,” former Watford captain Deeney told the Forest Green website after Oyedele arrived on loan.

“The fans will enjoy watching him. And we need to make sure we get him in a place where he can showcase his talents.”

At this time, the departure of a manager who signed you that week would generally be regarded negatively. Destabilizing, to put it mildly. With the exception of Oyedele, this may not be the case.

Undoubtedly, Deeney held the youthful forward in high regard. However, Fankaty Dabo recently learned that the 35-year-old is not precisely the type to offer support when things go awry. Oyedele, a player who still has much to learn, may ultimately exhale a murmur of relief if Deeney is replaced at The New Lawn by a coach who is more attuned to the nuances of “man management.”

Maxi Oyedele leaves Manchester United on loan

Oyedele, a Poland under-21 international from Salford, has been a member of Manchester United since his transfer from Burnley more than a decade ago. His first stint in the EFL is as such. Last season, Oyedele scored four goals in twelve appearances while on loan at non-league Altrincham.

“(United) got some top prospects,” Altrincham boss Phil Parkinson said. “With Maxi Oyedele, (a) real top, top player who will have a great career.”
