The Miami Hurricanes pulled off an incredible comeback to defeat the California Golden Bears 39-38 tonight, or rather, last night, in Berkley. For that reason, I’m opening my final drink at 2:36 AM EST. With little over three minutes remaining in the third quarter, Miami fell behind 35 to 10. Whoa. Several times I thought the game was done. So much so that I wrote an entirely other piece underneath. What a match.
Now let’s talk about the game’s three stars.
Let’s get the bad out of the way: Cam’s pick-six in the third quarter. I have witnessed some of the worst throws in college football this season, and it was one of them. That seemed to me to be the final nail in Miami’s coffin. Fortunately, Cam guided his team to four touchdowns in the second half and has ice in his veins. 35–53, 437 yards, 2 touchdowns, 15 running yards, and 1 rushing touchdown are his stats for the evening. Oh no. What a game Cam played in the final eighteen minutes. He persisted in using his arm and legs to make plays, refusing to give up. He makes a difference.
Late in the fourth quarter, X made the biggest offensive play of the game with a 77-yard catch and run. He had seven receptions for 163 yards before the end of the evening. If my memory serves me correctly, X converted two fourth downs and possibly even a third. You’ll have to be a little understanding of me as it’s almost three in the morning. The main point is that he made some huge catches. A clutch receiver is by definition restrepo. Adore him.
For the Canes tonight, Miami’s formidable tandem of running backs made just enough progress on the ground. They most likely would have had more chances if Miami hadn’t been trailing for such a large portion of the contest. Fletcher gained 81 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries in the game’s conclusion. Martinez had four catches for 51 yards and twelve rushes for 42 yards and a touchdown. His last reception was the crucial 22-yard catch and run to convert the long third down late in the fourth quarter. These two are amazing to watch run the football. Hopefully Jordan Lyle is well enough to continue being the sparkplug to these guys’ thunder.
