When the 32-year-old formally closes his deal with Manchester United at the start of next month, he will become the youngest head coach in Major League Soccer.

Ramsay will stay in his current position as manager Erik ten Hag’s first-team coach until after Man United’s matchup with rival Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday at the Etihad Stadium.

The Welshman joined the Red Devils first-team coaching staff in 2021 after leaving Chelsea to work with previous manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. In 2019, he became the youngest British coach to receive his UEFA Pro Licence.

Ramsay is presently anticipating his first senior position as a manager with Minnesota. He has also served as an assistant coach for the Wales national team and as a junior team coach for Swansea City.

After manager Adrian Heath left the team in October of last year, Cameron Knowles took temporary over as head coach of the Loons. The Shrewsbury native will join Minnesota after receiving his work visa.

Ramsay told Minnesota’s official website, “I’m incredibly excited to be joining a club with such a strong football culture, a fan-base that is passionate, and a brilliant infrastructure.

Over the process, I’ve spoken with a number of the club’s employees, and you can’t help but sense their enthusiasm for advancing the organisation.

The club has an extremely bright future ahead of it, and I’m excited to play a part in making that vision a reality.

I thank the club for putting its faith in me and I hope it’s the start of another successful period for everyone connected with Minnesota United.

“After an extensive search that included dozens of impressive domestic and international candidates, we are confident that Eric Ramsay is the best choice to lead our club,” said Khaled El-Ahmad, chief football officer of Minnesota.

His alignment in playing style and development philosophy, along with his experience working with elite players, coaches, and sporting staff at both the club and international level, all fit with our vision for MNUFC going forward.

He is a sincere individual who shares the club’s principles and culture, despite his football background. In addition to being multilingual and having extensive experience running an inclusive locker room, he also knows the benefits of a fervent fan base and community involvement.

Eric is a perfect fit for Minnesota United FC, and we are excited to have him join our team.

Minnesota has had a strong start to the 2024 season after placing 11th in the Western Conference the previous year. They defeated Austin FC 2-1 away from home in their opening game last weekend.
