For the Xhekaj family, it is both good and bad news as Montreal announces Florian Xhekaj’s signing. His brother Arber, a current Canadien, had surgery on his left shoulder earlier today, forcing him to miss the entire season. Florian is committed to this three-year entry-level contract (ELC) until the 2026–2027 NHL season.

Forward Florian Xhekaj and the Canadiens have reached an agreement on a three-year, entry-level contract (2024–25 to 2026-27).

Montreal Signs 2023 Fourth—Round Pick Florian Xhekaj

Florian Xhekaj signs his ELC after a decent season with the Hamilton Bulldogs of the OHL. In 63 games, the winger scored 34 goals and added 31 assists for 65 points. In addition, this was a huge step up from his 2022-23 campaign. Last year saw him register just 25 points in 68 games for the Bulldogs. The 2023 fourth-round pick of the Canadiens has grown leaps and bounds, and this contract rewards him accordingly. Similar to his brother, he has size at 6’4”, and we all know about the work ethic.

Another way that Florian Xhekaj and his brother are similar is that they both include skill into their play. Florian is a large man who doesn’t mind having a commanding presence on the internet. Furthermore, he knows how to finish, as shown by his 34 goals in junior league play at the age of 19. In a few years, perhaps, the brothers will be able to secure spots on the Canadiens second power play unit. Florian’s development will probably take some time. Therefore, it’s unlikely that he’ll play in Montreal the following season. Instead, he’ll most likely play in Laval with the Rocket in 2024–2025. On the other hand, if he performs well, he might not feel uneasy in the NHL during a trial run given his stature and strength. In

any sense, Montreal continues to build for the future, and this fits that build well. It’s also considered a low risk move, when you consider the knowledge and familiarity with the family’s known commitment to the game.
