Stanley overtook the Shrimps at the top of the table, and the team put up one of its poorest performances of the season following a run of four straight draws.
Derek Adams, the manager of Morecambe, remained with the same team that played so brilliantly against Bradford City in the middle of the week.
However, they failed to attain those heights on what proved to be a disastrous day.
Ben Tollitt scored a fantastic late goal, but Stanley prevailed thanks to two goals from Burnley loanee Dara Costelloe.
The first significant threat from Morecambe came on minute 17, when Adam Lewis’ long throw from Rhys Williams caused Billy Crellin to tip over a well-placed attempt.
Stanley got going after that effort, and a brief breakaway ended with Shaun Whalley missing a low shot.
Donald Love, a former captain of the Shrimps, got them close once more before they took the lead in minute 34.
Stuart Moore was sent off the pitch by Costelloe after it was determined that Yann Songo’o had fouled Whalley inside the area.
On the fortyth minute, Morecambe had their first real opportunity, however Whalley missed the mark from a decent position, and Tollitt’s shot went terribly wide after he was placed in on goal.
After Kelsey Mooney flicked the ball into his path, Stanley scored again in extended time, making him pay. Costelloe defeated Moore with a beautiful finish.
The second half saw Morecambe enjoy more possession but struggle to make any headway.
Lewis produced some dangerous crosses but it took them 86 minutes to make their mark.
Substitute Charlie Brown was fouled on the edge of the Stanley box and Tollitt produced a fine free-kick that flew past Crellin’s left hand.
That helped to lower the arrears, but for the Shrimps on yet another dismal afternoon, it was too little, too late.
