Derek Adams is nonetheless excited about testing his cunning against more financially strapped teams in League Two come opening day of the next season.
Adams, who returned to the Mazuma Mobile Stadium on a rolling contract, is currently one week into his third stint as Morecambe’s manager.

He has a lot on his plate, from scheduling preseason games to making sure his playing budget is utilised wisely to bolster the Shrimps’ weak roster.

It comes against the backdrop of the owner, Bond Group’s Jason Whittingham, looking to sell the club.

That offers the prospect of Adams working with one budget now and perhaps having a different one when the season begins in August.

Adams stated: “That could be the situation. You would always hope so given that I have never paid a transfer fee in my managing tenure.

“I’m not claiming that I’m going to pay any money right now for transfer costs. We’ll be where we are financially for the time being because I’ve spent £100,000 over the course of 16 years, but that could change.

We had the lowest budget in League Two when we were promoted, so I don’t think that scares me. Instead, I believe that it comes down to how you use your money and hire people.

“You can waste money on certain players and not get it right. You can spend money.”

Adams and Whittingham have spoken, and the manager has reiterated that the owner wants to sell up, nearly two years after the team was made ready for a sale.

The proprietor had informed the Shrimps Trust fan club that there was little chance Bond Group would remain in control for the next six months.

He later expressed his goal to finalise the conditions of a sale and make an announcement within the next two weeks to TalkSPORT last Wednesday.

Although Adams agrees that a sale is necessary, he says the team can manage for the time being.

“Although it’s significant, this football team can continue to operate within the current owner’s budget,” he remarked.

That is not a really big issue. The club’s owner has promised the board that he will continue to provide funding until a new owner is found.

“I believe that a number of previously uninvited interested parties have joined the table.”
