The death of a man – whose burned body was found near a football pitch – is not believed to be suspicious, police say.

Emergency services were alerted to the human remains in the Margaret Drive area of Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, at around 9am on Saturday.

A major investigation was launched, with Police Scotland initially treating the death as “unexplained”.

In an update on Monday morning, the force said formal identification is yet to take place, but the man’s next of kin have been informed.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in due course.

“Officers would like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding as enquiries were carried out in the area.”
