David Armstrong, who shockingly turned down a new contract to stay in the NRL with the Newcastle Knights, has signed with the Leigh Leopards for the 2025 season, according to Love Rugby League.

For several months, Leigh had made Armstrong their top priority and had made every effort to persuade him to join the Super League the next season. Before Armstrong played a few NRL games with the Knights, they were certain they had a deal finalised.

According to Love Rugby League, David Armstrong, who unexpectedly declined a new deal to remain in the NRL with the Newcastle Knights, has committed to the Leigh Leopards for the 2025 campaign.

Leigh had made Armstrong their top objective for a number of months, going above and above to convince him to play in the Super League the next year. They were positive that a deal had been concluded before Armstrong participated in a few NRL games with the Knights.

After he scored five tries in five NRL games in 2024 to increase his profile in Australia, the Knights moved quickly to sign him to a new contract.

However, Armstrong now seems to have been persuaded that he should be playing in the Super League in 2025 by Leigh’s multi-year, lucrative contract.

The Leopards, who go to Catalans Dragons this weekend in an attempt to revive their play-off push, have pulled off another outstanding move with the announcement that Aaron Pene will be joining Leigh in the coming days.
