Surfers help rescue child struggling in sea off Cornish coast

A D Class lifeboat was launched within minutes

To save a toddler who was having trouble at sea, a lifeboat rescue team was dispatched to Cornwall’s Perranporth beach. The St Agnes RNLI volunteer crew was reorganised just before 8 p.m. today, Thursday, August 1.

The Falmouth-based H.M. Coastguard received the call when a mother dialled 999 to report her youngster was having trouble in the water. After being deemed a “high priority tasking,” a D Class lifeboat was dispatched in a matter of minutes.

Fortunately, by the time of arrival, two surfers spotted the child about 100 meters out to sea and were able to bring them ashore. The crew assessed the child’s condition before passing them into the care of St Agnes Coastguard Cliff Rescue.

St Agnes RNLI released a statement on the incident and shared: ” The crew’s pagers sounded at 7.59 pm with instructions to launch immediately to a person in the water. This is considered a high priority tasking, and the D Class lifeboat was launched within minutes.

“A mother reported that her child was struggling in the sea by calling 999, according to reports from H.M. Coastguard in Falmouth. Upon reaching the location, the crew was happy to discover that the youngster had been seen by two surfers approximately 100 meters out to sea, who successfully assisted them in coming onshore.”

Beachgoers were cautioned by the RNLI that swimming is safest while RNLI lifeguards are on duty. Lifeguards are on duty at Cornwall beaches, including Perranporth Beach, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Swimmers “should only enter the water between the red and yellow flags. You should not enter the water when the plain red flag is flying.”.
