A sense of loss, shock and “overwhelming sadness” has filled the normally bustling streets of one of North Wales’ busiest resorts. Beaumaris, on Anglesey was the scene of an horrific crash which claimed the lives of three people yesterday.

Today North Wales Police confirmed two pedestrians – aged in their 60s, who were not from North Wales – and the driver of a a grey coloured Audi A8 – aged in his 80s, who was local, died in the collision.

The incident took place on Alma Street, within yards of the pier and the Menai Strait that separates Ynys Môn from the mainland. The tranquillity of that view jarred with the devastation which unfolded late yesterday afternoon where paramedics, police and firefighters worked tirelessly in a major operation for the emergency services.

In a joint statement, The Archbishop of Wales, Andrew John, and the Bishop of Bardsey, David Morris, said: “Our sympathy and prayers to all who have been involved in today’s car accident”.

They said: “This is devastating news for the community and for the friends and family of the three people who have sadly died.”

Reverend Lesley Rendle told BBC Radio Wales there was a “overwhelming feeling of sadness across the town.”

“People have been checking on neighbours and making sure that their friends are OK,” he said.

The North Wales Seal Research Organisation has postponed a birthday announcement as a mark of respect, as the organisation expresses its sadness following the tragedy.

In a statement the organisation said: “We are sending our love to the community of Beaumaris at this difficult time and holding them in our thoughts in light of today’s incident.
