A 57-year-old man who made a homophobic remark at a Norwich City game has been suspended from football for three years.
The incident happened during City’s November 2022 2-1 Championship loss at Carrow Road to Middlesbrough, when the visitors scored a late winner.
Three complaints regarding the man’s language were made to police after it was alleged that he had made homophobic remarks.
At a later time, the man—who was believed to be a supporter of the Canaries—was recognised and interrogated.
Norwich Crown Court issued a three-year football banning order on January 5, 2024, in response to an appeal filed by the police and Crown Prosecution Service.
“People who engage in such behaviour should be prepared to receive a football banning order which would undoubtedly affect their livelihood,” stated PC Mathew Ewing, a dedicated football officer.
“People ought to be free to enjoy football games without fear or concern of any behaviour which might diminish that experience,” he continued.
