Oldham Athletic is getting ready to travel for the second time in the next four days. However, manager Micky Mellon stated that he and his players could not have been more dissatisfied with their travel duration, even after chairman Frank Rothwell travelled across the Atlantic for 64 days.
Rothwell, who raised nearly £300,000 for Alzheimer’s Research UK by rowing 3,000, is anticipated to play in his first game at York City’s LNER Community Stadium tomorrow night (kickoff at 7.45 p.m.).
On Saturday, the 73-year-old watched a little bit on television while relaxing in his Antigua hotel room before heading back to his Oldham home.
Latics had extended their winning streak on the road to seven games with a convincing away victory, making the nearly 400-mile round trip to Maidenhead worthwhile.
Tomorrow, they intend to reach eight.
But Mellon responded, “Not as much as Frank,” when it was brought up how much mileage the Latics would be covering this week.
“We’ve not got anything to complain about, our chairman’s just rowed 3,000 miles across the Atlantic, so how can we stand here and complain about sitting on a bus and in a nice hotel.”
Latics have nearly sold out their allotted 1,500 away tickets at York, where they were enthusiastically supported by over 470 travelling supporters at Maidenhead.
“Absurd. “Impressive,” was Mellon’s statement to his followers.
“We enjoy representing you and are aware of your support at all times.
“The fans gave a fantastic performance on Saturday as well.
“We require them. We continue with fourteen games remaining.”
