Joe Bennett, defender for Oxford United, has signed a new one-year contract with the team.
When the 34-year-old joined the U’s in November to fill in for the injured Greg Leigh, he was not yet under contract.
After that, the left-back extended his short-term contract until the end of the campaign, contributing to the team’s first promotion back into the second division in 25 years.
Bennett played a significant role in each of the three postseason games, starting 16 of his 22 games and even unseating Leigh from the starting spot.
Joe Bennett resigned and addressed the team, saying, “I am very happy to be staying at Oxford United for this Championship season.”
“Since coming to the club in November, I have enjoyed every second of it, and I am eager to return to this calibre of football during this thrilling time for the team.
“I’m incredibly appreciative of Oxford United for giving me this opportunity back in November, and I want to keep working hard to make sure we have more success in this new campaign.”
“Joe has been a real influential figure in the team since arriving at the club in November,” stated Des Buckingham, head coach.
“We are all thrilled with his experience and quality, which were crucial to our promotion push.”to keep Joe with the team for the upcoming campaign.
“We look forward to working with Joe again in what promises to be an incredibly exciting campaign for everyone at Oxford United. Joe offers this team so much both on and off the pitch.”
