Rafferty, 30, sees his contract with the League One title winners expire at the conclusion of the season and has yet to sign an extension.

According to The News, he has stated that he would like to stay if it is the proper thing to do. I would definitely remain; I adore being down here. It’s a terrific club, and we’ve had an excellent season. When I first arrived here, all I wanted to do was set up this club.”

He added: “I’ve played the most of the games, with the exception of a suspension and a neck injury, but I know I’ve played well and personally believe I’ve had a great season. Hopefully there is more to come next year, we will see.”

Portsmouth are preparing for life in the Championship and need to weigh up who to offer deals to and who to let go.

Rafferty has enjoyed plenty of game time in this campaign and has made 41 appearances in all competitions, 38 of which have come in the league.

He is a valuable player to have in and around the squad because he is versatile and experienced.

The Liverpool-born player has previous experience in the second flight, which would be beneficial to John Mousinho’s side.

Rafferty rose up through the academy ranks at Anfield before leaving the Reds in 2021 as a youngster.

He spent seven years with Rochdale and played 257 games for the North West club, helping them achieve promotion from League Two in 2014.

Preston North End signed him in January 2019, and he appeared 72 times for the Lilywhites before joining Portsmouth.

Rafferty signed a two-year deal with Hampshire that is set to expire in late June.

Pompey have one more game remaining this season against Lincoln City away this weekend, as they attempt to rebound from their home setback to Wigan Athletic last time out.
